American Glass Paperweights
by: Francis Edgar Smith
1939, The Antique Press, Wollaston, MA
190 pages, $100. hardcover
This book has the distinction of being the first ever published dealing with fine glass paperweights. It is also known for being full of incorrect information, which is somewhat understandable as it was the first—although Mrs. Bergstrom’s book published the following year was amazingly accurate. This is an interesting glimpse spotlighting the lack of information early collectors had when building their collections, and how fortunate current collectors are to have the wealth of information which has been published since. There are 30 full page plates which do illustrate some good weights, French and American, and this book is collectable as it is rare and the first publication on the subject.
